Mrs. Robles

Hello

Thank you for checking out my website. I hope you find it informative. We will be working hard on reading, writing, and math this year.  I am listing some websites that you may want to check out.  These websites are fun and educational.  They may assist your child with their reading and math skills.  Please take the time to look at them.

Reading Practice Every Night

Reading is an area we will really be focusing on in first grade. It is important that your child spend at least 20 minutes every evening reading. Have them read out loud to you or another adult in the family so they can be held accountable to their 20 minutes of reading. They are able to read their leveled readers on the McGraw-Hill website. They also have high-frequency words and vocabulary words they are to learn to read each week. I will assign interactive games for them to do online each week as well. (https://connected.mcgraw-hill.com/school/q0a6) These are not mandatory but they will help reinforce what we are learning during the week in the areas of comprehension, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, their high frequency words and phonics.  Please see that your child is reading the materials I sent home for the week and is reading their leveled readers online.  I am checking their fluency daily in my reading groups. The interactive games online will also give them the extra practice they need to do well on their ELA test that is given weekly.  Those students who are consistent with their reading practice will definitely move forward in their progress. Many even surpass the reading requirements for first grade by the end of the school year. It really can be a determining factor on which children will be prepared to move forward to the next grade level and those who won't.

California Common Core Standards for Lang. Arts and Math

We learn a lot in first grade.  You will find an attachment for these standards. Look for the links in my locker on the left, click on the file and open it up.

Weekly Reports

I try to send home a weekly report every Monday. It is another way for us to keep the lines of communication going. I am using a Dojo Classroom App.

Dojo: I hope you have seen the Dojo Reports that have been sent home giving you an idea of how your child has been doing in class. These reports need to be signed and returned to me.  I keep record of those being returned. I feel it is important that we have some form of weekly communication. I also write on the Dojo indicating how many cards a child may have pulled in the week and if homework is not being turned in. If you are not returning the Dojo and their starts to be a chronic issue regarding behavior or incomplete homework with your child I can only assume you are not aware of this due to the Dojo Reports not being returned.  Then I will need to call you to discuss the situation. Please note that this is not a thorough reflection on how your child has been doing. It just gives you a little insight into their day/days. Certain times of the day it is easier for me to give positive points. I try to give points throughout the day. When the children hear the chime it motivates them to continue doing a good job. If I have to give negative points that also motivates them to check their behavior.  Sometimes when a negative point is being given they also are pulling a card. However, sometimes they have pulled a card and it is not reflective on the Dojo due to my involvement in teaching. I am too preoccupied with the lesson and don’t make my way to the computer. Other times our internet or the Dojo site has not been working properly.

Homework

Homework is important! Look at the files below for extra support to help your child be successful in doing their homework. They have a spelling worksheet, a math worksheet and their reading practice of 20 minutes everyday.  On Wednesday they will have a library book report to do as well. (They can earn prizes and a t-shirt for completing a total of 30 book reports in the year from the librarian.) If your child does not pass their spelling test on Friday you will need to have them start reading and writing their words 3 times each at home along with completing the spelling worksheet they do for homework each day.  Some children need the rote practice to help them learn to spell words. Remember they should be reading their leveled reader that has been assigned to them every night on the McGraw-Hill website. (https://connected.mcgraw-hill.com/school/q0a6)

Sight Words

All the sight words for your student are listed in the locker on the left. Practice these words over and over to become a great reader. Making flash cards is helpful. Focus on a few words a week and then add 5-10 words as they start learning their sight words. Practice spelling them and put them in sentences if needed. Practice. Practice. Practice!
